De-escalating in crisis

New possibilities in crisis care

In a crisis situation, there may be aggression in the relationship between care workers and the person experiencing crisis. The tools care workers have at their disposal for emergency situations may be preventive, such as a signalling plan. However, coercive measures may also be used. The use of coercive measures is often the result of impotence in a situation and takes place if de-escalating tools (relational) have not had the desired effect, the situation (conflict) is continuing to escalate and there is a threat (potential) of persons being harmed (criterion of danger). In general, both persons undergoing treatment and care workers experience the use of coercive measures as a defeat. There is also a real risk of existing work relationships being seriously disrupted on both sides.

Safe de-escalating

The CoWin media wall was developed to offer new options in crisis situations to care workers and persons undergoing treatment. The CoWin media wall allows them to communicate and share information without creating unsafe situations. It is possible to constantly anticipate the situation of the person being treated and where necessary, carry out a preventive intervention. This tool also positively influences the duration and quality of care during a possible confinement.

De-escalation tools for care workers

Thanks to the GRASP software platform, care workers are constantly in control of every communication wall. They can activate and modify the available applications for each person undergoing treatment. Profiles can be set up based on age, interests, mental capacity and clinical picture. Several qualitative research studies have established that the apps are seen as a constructive tool by both persons undergoing treatment and care workers. They create new possibilities for patients in crisis. Not only that, but the apps offer care workers new options in tense and escalating situations.
